Etymotic has this week unveiled their newly revamped ETY-Kids3 in-ear headphones, which have been specifically designed with children in mind. The ETY-Kids3 have been created to provide children with a safe way to listen to Apple devices and are fitted with volume limiters to protect children’s ear drums.

The ETY-Kids3 earphones also block background noise, and provide high-definition sound quality. Mark Karnes managing director of consumer products for Etymotic explains:

“Most parents understand that earphones can pose a real threat to hearing health, but are unsure how to manage their kids’ listening time or material,” – “Our goal is to provide a peace-of-mind solution for concerned parents who want to establish good listening habits while children are young.”

The ETY-Kids3 is also equipped with a three-button control and a mic designed for use with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. The new ETY-Kids3 are expected to arrive in stores and online towards the end of the month for around $80.

We’ve all been told off, quite rightly, for ‘distracted driving’ – but distracted walking?

But according to researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, the number of serious injuries to pedestrians listening to headphones has more than tripled in six years.

In many cases, cars or trains are sounding horns that the pedestrians can’t hear, leading to fatalities in nearly three-quarters of cases, they say.

"Everybody is aware of the risk of cell phones and texting in automobiles, but I see more and more teens distracted with the latest devices and headphones in their ears," says lead author Richard Lichenstein.

"Unfortunately, as we make more and more enticing devices, the risk of injury from distraction and blocking out other sounds increases."

The team examined case reports from 2004 to 2011 from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, Google News Archives and Westlaw Campus Research databases, looking for reports of pedestrian injuries or fatalities from crashes involving trains or motor vehicles.

There were 116 accident cases between 2004 and 2011 in which injured pedestrians were documented as wearing headphones. Seventy percent of the pedestrians were killed. More than two-thirds of victims were male and under the age of 30.

More than half of the vehicles involved were trains, and 29 percent reported sounding some type of warning horn prior to the crash.

And the rise in accidents over the years closely corresponds to the rising popularity of music players with headphones, says the team.

They suggest two possible causes: distraction and sensory deprivation, with the train or car warning signal drowned out by the music player’s sound.

Dr. Lichenstein says the study was initiated after reviewing a tragic pediatric death where a local teen died crossing railroad tracks. The teen was noted to be wearing headphones and did not avoid the oncoming train despite auditory alarms. Further review revealed other cases not only in Maryland but in other states too.

"As a pediatric emergency physician and someone interested in safety and prevention I saw this as an opportunity to – at a minimum – alert parents of teens and young adults of the potential risk of wearing headphones where moving vehicles are present," says Lichenstein .

Headphones to Shut Out the World <a href='>

In the olden days, you didn’t need much to enjoy air travel: a pair of goggles, a trusty biplane and a song in your heart. These days, the equipment list is slightly longer: a roll-on bag, a neck pillow and an eye mask — not to mention T.S.A.-friendly slip-on shoes, a fold-out laptop case and an all-plastic watch.

And noise-canceling headphones.

Regular headphones deliver music directly to your ears. Noise-canceling models also reduce any dull, consistent roar around you, like airplane engines, vacuum cleaners and presidential campaign speeches.

O.K., that last one was a joke. Noise-canceling (NC) headphones don’t actually reduce irregular noises like speech and crying babies in the row behind you. Even so, cutting down airplane roar is supposed to cut down on “noise fatigue,” an edgy tiredness that comes from hours-long exposure to loud noise. They also let you listen to music or videos on the train or plane at a much lower (and safer) volume.

For years, Bose has ruled the NC headphones roost. They’re incredibly good, but incredibly expensive; the latest model, the QuietComfort 15, costs $300. They’ve now been on the market for more than two years; surely, in that time, somebody must have introduced some less-expensive or better-featured rivals.

To test that theory, I rounded up the latest models from 10 companies. In alphabetical order: Able Planet NC1100B ($250), AKG K495 NC from Harman ($350), Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B ($125), Bose QuietComfort 15 ($300), Creative HN-900 ($100), JVC HANC250 ($103), Monster Beats by Dr. Dre ($300), Panasonic RP-HC720 ($90), Sennheiser PXC 310 ($300), Sony MDR-NC200D ($200) and Sony MDR-NC500DM3 ($400). I managed to stuff all of them, including their black carrying cases, into a bulging canvas tote bag. It raised some serious T.S.A. eyebrow.

I tried them out on four cross-country flights, constantly swapping pairs, testing each for its NC ability and music fidelity (and utterly baffling my seatmates).

I discovered that when you’re shopping for NC headphones, only eight things matter.

NOISE CANCELING They all work the same way: an external microphone samples the ambient sound, and then pumps out the opposite sound waves, thereby canceling out some of that external roar.

But there’s an enormous range of NC effectiveness. For example, the Monster Beats may be the coolest-looking headphones on the market, but you’d get better noise canceling by stuffing Kleenex in your ears. There’s practically no difference at all between On and Off.

The Audio-Technica, Creative, Able Planet and JVC headphones do best at canceling low or medium frequencies; they leave plenty of roar. The Panasonic, Sony and AKG models do better. (The Panasonic’s well-designed seal starts blocking sound even before you turn on the NC switch.)

But not one comes close to the Bose. Putting these things on makes the world go away. It’s the difference between being at a rock concert and being a couple of miles away from the stadium.

(On my ears, the 15′s create a weird, slightly uncomfortable pressure, as you sometimes feel in a descending airplane. But the customer reviews online suggest that I’m a tiny minority.)

BATTERY NC headphones require power. Some have built-in rechargeable batteries, including the Sennheiser 310 (20 hours) and AKG (10 hours).

Others require AA or AAA batteries: the Audio Technica (40 hours), Panasonic (34 hours), Bose (35 hours), Creative (40 hours), Sony MDR-NC200D (22 hours), Able Planet (50 hours), JVC (50 hours) and Monster Beats (12 hours)

One pair — the Sony NC500DM3 — has both: a rechargeable battery (16 hours) and a compartment on the cord for AA batteries (12 hours more), just in case.

PLAYBACK WHILE OFF Most of these headphones can pass along music even when they’re not powered on; that is, you use up battery power only when you need noise cancellation. Some, though, are utterly silent when they’re switched off, which is an unhappy surprise. These laggards include the Bose, the Beats and the Sony NC500DM3.

ON-EAR, OVER-EAR There are two kinds of NC headphones: those with big cups that rest on your head, enclosing your entire ear, and those with smaller cups that rest on your ears themselves.

(Lots of people also swear by the in-ear types — not headphones at all, but something like custom-fitted earbuds that plug your ear opening completely, although I find those uncomfortable for long flights. Then again, some people also swear by plain foam earplugs from the drugstore. They’re not much good for music playback, but for 25 cents, they do a great job at noise cancellation, and you can’t beat the battery life.)

The beauty of on-ear headphones, like the Sony NC200D, AKG and JVC models, is that they’re tiny. They pack down small and don’t bulk up your carry-on. But after a few hours, they can give you sore ear cartilage, which is such a weird ailment you’re almost embarrassed to mention it.

The over-ear models don’t have that problem, but of course they’re huge and come in even huger carrying cases.

The brilliant exceptions are those Beats headphones. Even though they’re over-ear, their cups fold back 180 degrees into the headband. (Imagine your hand folding completely flat against the inside of your wrist, and you’ll have the idea.) The result: full-size cups in a much smaller carrying case.

MONITOR BUTTON When you’re in flight, sometimes your ears are required for other duties, like answering questions from flight attendants or seatmates. Most headphone wearers address these situations by simply removing the headphones.

The Sony and Beats headphones, though, offer a Monitor button that simultaneously mutes your music and patches the outside world through to the inside. You can hear what people are saying without having to remove the headphones.

MUSIC FIDELITY Cutting out unwanted sound is one goal; doing a great job of delivering the sound you do want is the other.

Now, you won’t get audiophile sound quality from $200 or $300 headphones. But the Bose, AKG, JVC and Sony models delivered good power, solid and distinct bass, clear midtones and crisp highs. The Beats, as you’d guess from their rapper heritage, specialize in thuddy bass. The Sennheisers sound great, but don’t offer much power; subtle classical-music passages disappear completely on the plane.

The sound from the Audio Technica and Able Planets is nothing to write home about. The Creative sound is clear and balanced, but soft passages are lost in flight. The Panasonic set doesn’t have much power, but its noise canceling is so good, you can listen at a lower volume and still hear everything.

SPECIAL FEATURES The Bose and Beats have a microphone on the cord, so you leave them on for smartphone calls. The Able Planets have a volume control on the cord.

The Sennheiser is the only Bluetooth model here, meaning that you don’t need a cord at all to listen to the music on your phone. The experience can be wireless.

PRICE In general, there’s never been a better illustration of the rule that you get what you pay for. The costly AKG K495 ($350), for example, is the Lexus of headphones: gorgeous brushed-metal design, luxury materials, tangle-free cloth-covered cord, extremely comfy. They sound great and completely eliminate low- and mid-airplane noise.

Even they can’t touch the Bose ($300) for noise cancellation, though. Bose’s technology is still a couple of years ahead of the competition.

The compact, on-ear Sony MDR-NC200D ($200) also stands out for excellent noise canceling and resonant, clear sound. Among over-ear models, the Panasonic RP-HC720 is a steal: $90 for noise cancellation and sound quality that ought to cost $250.

Good NC headphones make a huge difference in the stress of flying. Now, with fares already high, it may seem crazy to suggest spending another few hundred on accessories like these. But your alternative may be even worse: someday paying for massage therapists, hearing aids and nerve therapy.

ScienceDaily (Jan. 16, 2012) — Listen up, pedestrians wearing headphones. Can you hear the trains or cars around you? Many probably can’t, especially young adult males. Serious injuries to pedestrians listening to headphones have more than tripled in six years, according to new research from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. In many cases, the cars or trains are sounding horns that the pedestrians cannot hear, leading to fatalities in nearly three-quarters of cases.

"Everybody is aware of the risk of cell phones and texting in automobiles, but I see more and more teens distracted with the latest devices and headphones in their ears," says lead author Richard Lichenstein, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and director of pediatric emergency medicine at the University of Maryland Medical Center. "Unfortunately as we make more and more enticing devices, the risk of injury from distraction and blocking out other sounds increases."

Dr. Lichenstein and his colleagues studied retrospective case reports from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Google News Archives, and Westlaw Campus Research databases for reports published between 2004 and 2011 of pedestrian injuries or fatalities from crashes involving trains or motor vehicles. Cases involving headphone use were extracted and summarized. The research was recently published online in the journal Injury Prevention.

Researchers reviewed 116 accident cases from 2004 to 2011 in which injured pedestrians were documented to be using headphones. Seventy percent of the 116 accidents resulted in death to the pedestrian. More than two-thirds of victims were male (68 percent) and under the age of 30 (67 percent). More than half of the moving vehicles involved in the accidents were trains (55 percent), and nearly a third (29 percent) of the vehicles reported sounding some type of warning horn prior to the crash. The increased incidence of accidents over the years closely corresponds to documented rising popularity of auditory technologies with headphones.

"This research is a wonderful example of taking what our physicians see every day in the hospital and applying a broader scientific view to uncover a troubling societal problem that needs greater awareness," says E. Albert Reece, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., vice president for medical affairs at the University of Maryland and John Z. and Akiko K. Bowers Distinguished Professor and dean of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. "I hope that these results will help to significantly reduce incidence of injuries and lead us to a better understanding of how such injuries occur and how we can prevent them."

Dr. Lichenstein and his colleagues noted two likely phenomena associated with these injuries and deaths: distraction and sensory deprivation. The distraction caused by the use of electronic devices has been coined "inattentional blindness," in which multiple stimuli divide the brain’s mental resource allocation. In cases of headphone-wearing pedestrian collisions with vehicles, the distraction is intensified by sensory deprivation, in which the pedestrian’s ability to hear a train or car warning signal is masked by the sounds produced by the portable electronic device and headphones.

"As a pediatric emergency physician and someone interested in safety and prevention I saw this as an opportunity to — at minimum — alert parents of teens and young adults of the potential risk of wearing headphones where moving vehicles are present," he says.

When iPods hit the scene 10 years ago, the small, white ear buds that came with the devices became the symbol for listening to music on the go.

Today, that’s changing.

More and more people are expressing themselves with pricey headphones, with some fashion-forward music lovers rocking updated versions of the oversized headsets popular in earlier eras.

Bose has been known for its larger headphones in recent years, and now celebrities have taken note and aided in the resurgence of the ear amplifiers. In 2008, Monster launched Beats by Dr. Dre with Dr. Dre, and it is the most recognizable of celebrity-branded headphones. Monster later released headphones with Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Diddy, Daft Punk, Nick Cannon and LeBron James.

In 2011, 50 Cent, Quincy Jones and Ludacris released their own line of headphones.

Dre, the Grammy-winning rap legend who has produced hits for Eminem, 2Pac, 50 Cent and Mary J. Blige, says he is offended when he sees people using generic headphones.

“It’s almost like a knife in the heart,” he said while promoting the headphones in 2010. “We’re in the studio, at least me, for years at a time trying to work on music, tweaking it, trying to get the sound right, and for people to walk around and listen to the music on those cheap white headphones is ridiculous.”

But some people may have a reason for not buying Beats by Dr. Dre. The cheapest set costs $100, and the most expensive pair is $500. And 50 Cent’s Sync by 50 ranges from $130 to $400; the lowest price for Soul by Ludacris is $70; the highest is $300. (Partial sales from 50 Cent and Cannon’s headphones go to charity.)

“You go out and spend three, four hundred dollars on an iPod, and then you go put your earphones in and your iPod sounds like (garbage),” said Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Interscope, A&M and Geffen Records and co-launcher of Beats by Dr. Dre. “This is about releasing the sound that’s in the iPod.”

Monster’s CEO Noel Lee took it a step further: “Most people have never heard what their iPod sounds like.”

Research shows that most MP3 listeners own multiple headphones, said Karim Noblecilla, director of product marketing for Sony’s Personal Audio Accessories division.

Noblecilla says Sony has a range of headphones targeting specific demographics from surfers to 13-year-olds. Its newest series, the Balanced Armature, is billed as the “smallest and lightest in-ear digital noise canceling headphones in the market today.” It ranges from $80 to $500.

Noblecilla says style and appearance have played a heavy role in headphone production in recent years.

Diddy said that was his contribution to his line, Diddybeats.

“Not only did we want to have the best sound, we wanted to have the best-looking ear bud, and we want it to come in flavors,” he said when his line came out.

Boise, Idaho (PRWEB) January 17, 2012

Most earphones used for running focus on sealing the ear so that the user is isolated and only able to hear their own music. Without the ability to hear environmental sounds a dangerous situation is created. earHero, http://www.earhero.com, offers the Worlds Safest Earphone. earHeros proprietary, patent pending, product uses miniature speakers that are so tiny they never block the ear canal.

Clinical audiologist and inventor Matt Murphy knew that standard earphones were unsafe because they isolated the wearer from dangers in the environment. Additionally, when the user sealed their ear with typical earphones the sound pressure would likely cause hearing loss over time.

Murphy noted that, if your ears are ringing after listening to your earphones for a period of time the chances are good that you have initiated a temporary hearing loss. Repeated use can lead to a Permanent Threshold Shift, also known as permanent hearing loss.

To prevent these issues Murphy created a product that would allow people to listen to music while at the same time maintaining awareness of sounds around them. “The earHero earphones do not seal the ear so the sound pressure is released and the outside sound is allowed to enter the ear,” explained Murphy.

Being an audiologist, Murphy used products that were typically found in high end hearing aids and created a few prototypes for testing.

After 7 years of research and development earHero earphones were recently released to the marketplace. This product is small, comfortable, and has good sound quality.

In addition to the outdoor enthusiast market earHero earphones are currently placed in various United States governmental security departments.

earHero earphones can be purchased at http://www.earhero.com.

Matt Murphy is a clinical audiologist with a private practice in Boise Idaho. Matt and his wife Mali are audiologists, members of the American Speech and Hearing Association and owners of House of Hearing Audiology Clinic, a family business that was started in 1974, http://www.houseofhearingclinic.com. Matt specializes in testing and fitting of the latest hearing aid technology and is dedicated to helping seniors with all of their hearing needs. Matt is also the founder of earHero Sales, Inc., http://www.earhero.com and developer of the earHero line of earphones that allow the user to listen to music or two-way radio and maintain constant awareness to environmental sounds.
Matt can be reached via email at matt(at)earhero(dot)com.

Researchers have found that walking with headphones can have serious consequences since accidents have tripled in recent years, according to a recent study.

SEE ALSO: The Case Against Liberal Despair

The number of people killed or seriously injured has jumped from 16 to 47 between 2004 and 2011, says a study from the journal Injury Prevention.

Researchers examined 116 records of people wearing headphones where accidents occurred between them and vehicles from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Google News archives and Westlaw Campus Research.

The Los Angeles Times reports:

The victims’ average age was 21 and most (68%) were male. The majority (67%) were under the age of 30. Most (55%) were hit by trains, and 70% of the crashes (the bulk of which were in urban areas) ended in death.

In 74% of the cases police or eyewitness reports said the pedestrian had headphones on when hit. And 29% of reports made mention or horns or sirens going off before the crash.

The study’s authors noted that the “sensory deprivation” Â and distraction that occurs when pedestrians wear headphones are the leading reasons why they’ve seen a spike in accidents.

Richard Lichenstein told Science Daily that headphone usage often results in people not receiving aural cues (ie., honking horns, blaring sirens from vehicles) that would normally prevent such accidents.

“Everybody is aware of the risk of cell phones and texting in automobiles, but I see more and more teens distracted with the latest devices and headphones in their ears,” says lead author Richard Lichenstein, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and director of pediatric emergency medicine at the University of Maryland Medical Center. “Unfortunately as we make more and more enticing devices, the risk of injury from distraction and blocking out other sounds increases.”

More comprehensive research is needed to determine which groups of people face the greatest risks, experts say.

Given that the headphone industry is valued at more than $1 billion with brands such as Beats by Dr. Dre leading the pack, this study may alert consumers to certain risks that may exist when listening to headphones while walking.

Will this study’s findings change your listening habits? Let us know in the comments.
