I'm sorry, but I have a hard time believing there is no discussion of metering in the D40 manual. Are you looking in the REAL manual, or the Quick guide?

Metering is how the camera determines exposure. It can be based on multi sample points, or center weighted, or a spot meter reading in the center of the frame. You may need to look under EXPOSURE for information on metering.

Noise reduction and metering have nothing to do with each other. You should not need to have the noise reduction on except for very long exposures or very high ISO selection
